Basics

Ghana is a vibrant country in West Africa, known for its rich culture, warm hospitality, and history as the first African nation to gain independence in 1957. It has a population of about 34 million people, with Accra as the capital city.

English is the official language of Ghana, making communication easy for visitors. However, there are over 70 local languages and dialects, with Twi, Ewe, and Ga among the most widely spoken.

Ghana has a tropical climate. The south is hot and humid, while the north is hot and dry. There are two main seasons: the rainy season (April–October) and the dry season (November–March).

Ghana has one of the fastest-growing economies in West Africa, built on natural resources like gold, cocoa, and oil. Agriculture, services, and small-scale trade also play a big role in daily life. The local currency is the Ghanaian Cedi (GHS), and while cash is commonly used in markets and towns, cards and mobile money are also popular in cities.

Ghanaian cuisine is flavorful and hearty, often built around staples like rice, maize, plantain, yam, and cassava. Popular dishes include jollof rice, banku, fufu, and waakye, usually enjoyed with spicy soups and stews.

Ghana offers lively markets, colorful festivals, drumming, and dance. Visitors can explore coastal castles, national parks, beaches, and the vibrant art scene in Accra. The warmth and friendliness of Ghanaians make every experience memorable.

Ghana is rich in history, once home to powerful kingdoms like the Ashanti Empire. It was also a major center during the transatlantic slave trade, with coastal forts and castles that stand as reminders today. Religion plays a central role in life, with Christianity and Islam being the most practiced faiths, often blending with cultural traditions and community life.
